ABOUT PRAGUE

Prague is the capital and the largest city of the Czech Republic, situated in the centre of Bohemia on the Vltava River. It has evolved for eleven centuries into its present form. Today it covers an area of 496 square kilometres and has about 1,240,000 inhabitants.

Since 1920, the official name of the city has been "Capital City of Prague". The phrase "Prague - the heart of Europe" refers to the location of the metropolis in the centre of Bohemia and Europe.

The legend of the founding of Prague claims that the mythical Princess Libuše predicted the city's creation with her famous prophecy: "I see a great city whose glory will touch the stars. There is a place in the woods as far as you can go in a day, and if you go there you will find a man making a threshold out of wood. From this threshold name this place Prague."

The capital of the Czech Republic boasts a monument reserve that is one of the largest monuments in the world in terms of its size and significance. It covers an area of 860 hectares and includes approximately 1,300 unique monuments. The most historically significant parts of Prague are located in the area of today's Prague 1, i.e. in the medieval core of the city, which has been a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1992.
